in Fridays tutorial David recommend me to just jump into designing and see what I feel feel right and just to explore my ideas as that’s the only way my designs will come alive and work it’s all about exploring and trying out theres no issues with trying.
instead of just jumping into my editorial design I started to write down some small words that linked my dissertation and ways I could link it to a design outcome, e.g repeating words to make the outcome more typography based, I just felt this small brainstorm would be really useful to help myself think of ways to make designs that are different and have the connection to the words on the pages not just random designs elements that don’t link to my written work.
while looking at this pull aport brainstorm, I feel things like making my typography very bold to show the idea of straight to the point and experiences that readers don’t often get, I will definitely be making buy design my editorial bright instead of just black and white, all the link above have given me small designs element details that I want to try out.
while this dissertation design is marked I will only get marked on 4 or 5 spreads but while looking at my written work I have written 6 chapters and I feel if I want to go and show my design out in industry it would make sense to design all of my dissertation making them into spreads especially because I’m really proud of work and I feel it would look nice all designed. instead of just throwing all my text into indesign and just placing it on the spreads and moving it around numerous of times I felt reading my dissertation chapters and pulling out the main points or quotes that stood out and visual think what they look like, I went through my chapters writing comments on the side page so I can go back every time and know what my idea is this is a really useful method for me to think and time manager my time instead of just wasting my time of just pulling and moving stuff around so much.
starting design a spread layout
to start designing my spreads I went on to design just one chapter of my dissertation instead of throwing myself into too much to design for as my ideas go too crazy and distracts me from designing at the best quality, my main idea for this chapter is to use a powerful quote from my lit review and using it as a centre quote on the spread I feel the quote was very strong point In my dissertation and deserve to be seen in the design.
I started of with picking a handwritten front that I had downloaded this isn’t my front I will bet sing for my final outcome but right I like the quote and I feel that it shows what I want to have, the colour choice is a bright pink to link the feminine part of my dissertation however I feel this pink doesn’t really work with other colours especially the dark navy that on the right I really like the baby but having the bright pink it really harsh on the eyes and could put people off so I will be developing this.
developing from the from the quote page I ended up changing the colour and the layout of the quote trying to be more experimental and the colour of the pink that I ended up picking ( below) is a lot softer on the eye and easier to read I really like this colour Platte and it’s very different to my typical colour choice so I think I will be exploring this colour theme a bit more in the future, once I changed the quote change I went along to explore my lit review on the pages the layout on the left was my start page but I realised straight away the last paragraph being on the bottom right made the flow of the page really award looking and because the left side of the spread being text heavy I felt there needed to be some negative space on the left page.
Below is the last draft I started to design tonight, while this isn’t a lot on the page I feel theres been some type of improvement on the paged and theres a lot more play with type here however I think at the top of the page theres too much negative space for linking and the typefaces need to be change but this is a start and I can using this as a draft to improve in the following days and weeks.
