D&AD – colour choice and typefaces

Typeface picking

At the start of this project I looked into the brands and checked for brand guidelines that the brands already I found out that the brand had a typeface that it was used on every outcomes that the brands has done so I felt it was important to carry on that design method in my outcomes to make the work link back the Brand and app, the typeface was called Nunito Sans, to stick to the Duolingo theme and brand I went online to download the font.

when I started designing I knew that I needed to include another typeface because the one typeface wasn’t make my outcomes stand out in areas I was trying to highlight in the design e.g hierarchy information , I took some time out  to experiment with different typeface that were all san serif to see which would work the best and make my outcomes better.

looking at the typefaces I left theres many different sizes and font heavness but so I had to cut down them and got stuck with 3 top ones that I could use, designing in  san serif is easier for people to read to the letter format due my idea being a creative I wanted my information on the design to stand out and give the information across to the young audience in the fast ways as people often lose interest having more simple typefaces can help do this. Using  both typefaces (Formal DJR BAnner and Nuito Sans) they work together with each other well even though the typefaces look the same the different thickness of the design help hierarchy different areas of the designs.

colour picking

Designing for Duolingo a company that already exist meant that the company would have brand guidelines to follow for tone of voice, colours and so on, the first thing I did with this brief was look for the brand guidelines and colours to see if there was something major that I would have to follow throughout this brief.

while researching I found. that Duolingo had 3 different sections for colours that I could follow, theses were character colours and primary and secondary colours different design areas to make the campaign more my own and stand out a bit more I knew wanted to use two primary colours of the Green that seen as the brand icon colour that’s used on everything and a Blue as the colour is very vibrant but relaxing to look.

the colour theme I picked to used was the duolingo secondary colours and just tone then colours down each time. Due to my idea of using two colours from the brand I had an idea that I wanted to experiment with in this project of using two colours and trailing out monochromatic on the green and blue because I’ve not really played around this effect in my design work let due to this being my last year I want to play and try out new things in my portfolio pushing ideas and colours choices that I wouldn’t really of done before.

while designing I found the effect gave the look of sky and grass that I felt inked to idea of making the designs about travel, the monochromatic colours really stands out and don’t make the design too overcrowd with colours as I’ve kept a simple colour theme that links back the brands colour guidelines tying everything together will making it visually nice too look at.

below is the colours choices and ideas of different tones I thought about before creating my own colours on the bottom right., I feel theses effects work very well tougher makes the colour theme fun to look at and different to normal typical soild colour themes.
