Monday 28th January
Today was the new task launch of making a placards, in the group everyone was making notes and ideas of what to create in the group so I went off and made a brainstorm that include, group ideas, placards idea and my ideas on slogan this what my sketch book looked like after, this will help me show my ideas to the group and have an idea in my head.
I also went on to design some more visual ideas in my sketch book to give myself some ideas of what I want to create within my group, me and Morgan have decided we will be working on a placard as a pair, this design will be digital but also handmade from her illustration she will send me.
Tuesday -29th of January
To start of the designing stages of the placards the group all decided to come in to make a start on the handmade one with paint and cardboard, Laura wasn’t able to come and not James so me, Morgan and hari went for it and started to think of the best slogan for the placard.
The martials weren’t available in the studios so went on a hunt to find some cardboard and paint that can used after 40 minutes we found some and sat down and started to cut the box up to make the base of the sign.
The slogan that chosen was from my ideas that I came up with
” Enough is enough we will not be foiled with money scam anymore” Due to the slogan above being to big to fit on the cardboard we cut it down to ” enough is enough we will not stand for your scam’ the slogan ended up to be ” enough is enough stop with your money scam” .

We left the placard to dry in the illustrator room where I will go back to it on Thursday to remove the tap and paint the words white.
Thursday 31st January
Today was the day I went to university to remove all of the tap and start paint , this process took So long to and the paint wasn’t working well with me the group all didn’t come in I wish they did as I made a mistake with the paint, i had to go home due to issues t home so I left the paint to dry and Morgan was going to finish it off on the weekend or we will do it on Monday morning as a group.
Here is what the placard looked like after removing the tap and after painting, As you can see the paint wasn’t looking it best plus it was too wet to paint anymore.
Friday 1st February
SNOW DAY, the university was closed for today due to snow fall last night, the group was meant to meet each other day while I was at work and working on one of my own outcomes from the group due to road being unsafe university was closed and my work, I spent my time at home making a hand made placard with white card.
The idea I chose to make from my sketch book ideas was the price tag idea, I really liked the idea of this placard as the placard was unique and I believe in a real protest it would stand out .
the process to make my hand made placard was using paint, card,black and green pens and pencils, to start my process off I had to cut my card down from A1 to roughly between A2-A3 I also cut down the top edges to give it the outline of a typical price tag. simply by using a rule and pen I marked out lines of where to put each word on the placard everything was in pencil before using pens and paint.
the slogan I used was ” Life shouldn’t be all about money and price tags”
I wanted to use something that linked to the protest well and also ties into the placard design this slogan I come up with worked well with both of my plans. After sketching out my designs I drew the bold words I wanted to stand out come in sharpie before going over in pen this the first outcome below before paint.
From the placard above you can see that some words didn’t really stand out and soon as I added paint to the placard onto of the bold text it went horribly wrong so I painted all of the card black making a fresh start as a new idea come to my mind.
The new idea was to use the same layout and make the smaller text the same size but in a bolder pen like the sharpie I created all the words in the sharpie but the words that I believed should have more impact and stand out were taller and had a green glow on the outside, I also added in small money sign details on the placard to give the design a bit more detail instead of a plain placard with text. Adding colour to the placard even helped the card stand a bit more from far away .
Sunday 3rd February
As this is collaboration, I’ve paired up with Morgan to create an outcome for now our placards, mine and Morgan idea is for her to create some money type of illustration by hand and then scanning them into the computer, I will be taking over to do the graphic side of the placard.
Morgan sent me two different design that suit in well with the protest due to them both linking to money below are the two images she sent me to use and develop into a digital placard .
Taking on these photos I took them both into photoshop to start designing I had an idea of what I wanted to do from my visual idea board I created in my sketchbook on Monday night.
The first design I started to create was a simple layout with bold text that’s white the colour that stands out on the placard the most, I liked this the design as it suited the group ideas of what they thought should be included in all such as the money idea, and colour scheme and font idea. To develop this placard I sent some time playing around seeing what I do, I ended up with a more creative looking design then a placard with simple white text this design but a twist of the simple design.
To the outcome below I added a white layer onto of the background picture and bringing down the transplcatice level, this gave the placard background a more dull look instead a bright in your face colour background this helped the next on the front stand out a bit.
To create the text I had to cut around the typefaces making them into shapes and removing some of the background I really like the look of this design as it’s simple looking matching the group ideal design but it has got a unique look as there’s no bold colour on the text used its the background picture used, in my eye I think this design works well however it might be hard to see by certain people of the public.
The slogan I used ” Save your money not the brand !” is basic but give a message to people of look you need to stop handing over money and save your bank account, the message links to the protest well because the protest is all about brands complaining touch profit.
Before moving onto another slogan and the other background created by Morgan I wanted to create another draft to see what outcome I prefer more. The next idea method I used for the placard was to add a white simple block that the text will sit on and it a draw people attention as it’s bold and brighter then the background 
For draft above I have mixed feeling on the layout and design because the layout is simple with the main text in the middle but there just too much dead space in my eyes I wanted to add something else in, the background colours of the drawing I made a bit brighten then before as I felt having the white box it drained some of the colour away, `The white box helps push out the text but I feel that it doesn’t really suit the placard something doesn’t look right.
To help the issues of having too much dead space I added in the protest campaign name in the placard at the bottom right, this idea came to mind about how a lot of protest happened and people don’t really understand what they are on about or what the protest campaign is called so include the name at the bottom can give the public what protest is happening at the that location
The second image that created by Morgan was the Pound sign design, the design was uploaded onto illustrator but the quality wasn’t the best so when using the work I felt that it would be hard to work with due to the quality of the photo however I managed to get around the issues.
My first step in photoshop was the make the image small on the page and remove the yellow ism background I did this by press Auto colour setting it just wiped away the bad colour.
Here is the before and after of the removing the yellow, removing the yellow helps to brighten up the image a bit more, meaning it will stand out more in the placard design.
The idea I went on to use for this placard was to use the photos inside the text words this idea is to put a twist on a simple let design as your using simple typefaces design but also a picture to create a more bolder and creative look.
Monday 4th February
Today was the week presentation day of showing the placards cards outcomes as a group I uploaded my work on a powerpoint to show my work within the group, I liked all of my outcomes as they fitted in the groups needs.
Speaking to group member Morgan about our collaboration outcomes, she felt that we worked well with each other and that one of her outcomes she tried to make wasn’t so successful so I took on the work to design on to create another outcome with her work.
The illustration that Morgan gave me was a pair of jeans that was a photo that she drew onto of to create a design for us here is what the photo looked like before handing over to me to create text on with my graphics skills.
To keep the design like my other placards I went to photoshop and added in the same method of using a bold white box and layering it on top of the photo this was to make sure the text can be seen over the top of the background giving the text a bold look so people will see it from far away.
The slogan that picked to be used was Morgan one of “Hollister jeans: such a rip off ” this slogan was to link to the placard and a big company that rip off people for money, when designing I tired to link the design layout of the text on the white box to kinda have a look like the brand design already.
The black box around the white looks like it goes but it doesn’t really suit the design in my head so I removed it as the design was only a draft the black was too in your face so I went on to change the size of box and the colour seeing what look nice, I went for the skin colour of orange to be the background of the box it gives a shadow on the box and also on the text, this design ended up becoming the final put outcome for the placard number 4 created with me and Morgan in the group
